Adamstown Renovation, Adamstown NSW
The clients were a young couple who love their old cottage located near a prime urban spot with easy access to the best of Newcastle's suburbs. They asked for clean lines in both the interior architecture enveloped in natural light from all rooms but retaining privacy from the tight urban nature of neighbouring properties.
The resulting design features ample skylights, highlight windows and existing window opening sills raised for privacy. Internal walls within the gun-barrel floorplan were removed to become an open-plan arrangement with the new kitchen and dining placed at the back. Using only the existing footprint of the house, every square inch in plan and ceiling height was maximised to include a new entry nook, ensuite with a curved shower to soften the corner, a larger bathroom with bath tub and shower, a concealed European laundry and built-in robes throughout. A new rear covered deck extends off the kitchen and dining spaces to for entertaining larger gatherings. The exterior vinyl sheeting was replaced with new painted weatherboard and finished to preserve the original cottage features. Completed in late 2025.Photography: Sophie Tyler
